The Geelong Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that it has recently been awarded a $5,000 grant under the Victorian State Government’s Streelife Program.

Chamber Executive Officer, Bernadette Uzelac said “This funding will greatly assist the Chamber’s Geelong Retail Network to reach out and provide further support to the local retail sector. Our first Retail Snapshots Survey showed that the retail sector is still quite upbeat and optimistic about the future and we aim to further develop our links with retailers through this very welcome funding grant.”

Independent sales manager Steve Clark is pictured presenting the award to Black Pepper's Gwen Jensen, Carline Threadwell and Kerrie Moore.
Customer Noela Alexander successfully nominated the Moorabool St clothing retailer for its "excellent service with friendly, individual assistance...making the atmosphere welcoming and relaxing”.
The monthly customer service award is part of the Shop Local Geelong campaign, a Geelong Independent initiative encouraging shoppers to spend money locally rather than online or out of town.
Winners receive acknowledgement in the Independent and a $1000 advertising package.

From 1 July 2012 the introduction of the Carbon Price will impact costs for most businesses, particularly through energy bills.

Substantial funding assistance for energy efficiency and emissions reduction projects is being made available to eligible manufacturers, and businesses in the manufacturing supply chain, under the Australian Government's $1 billion Clean Technology Program.

These competitive grants can pay at least 25% of eligible project costs, and up to 50% for smaller projects at smaller businesses.

They are now open for applications.

On Tuesday 13 December, Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business Louise Asher, launched a competition for small businesses across Victoria to win free business mentoring.

Small business owners can go online to the Business Victoria website (www.business.vic.gov.au) and follow the link to the competition form. Entrants simply explain in 30 words or less what their business would do with a mentoring package and the 10 best explanations will receive a free mentoring package.

The guide can help you understand your rights and responsibilities as a business owner when deciding to pass on the cost of a carbon price. It gives information on prohibitions against making misleading, deceptive or false claims under Australian Consumer Law.
If you choose to raise your prices once a carbon price takes effect, the guide will help you avoid misrepresenting your claim and continue trading without intervention from the ACCC.

Business confidence levels improved a little in July, up 2 to +2 index points.
(An Index above zero indicates that optimists outweigh pessimists)
Heightened concerns over a US debt default (which was of particular concern during the survey period), general uncertainty about global growth, as well as concerns for rising interest rates domestically appear to be weighing on business confidence levels. The Geelong Chamber of Commerce kicked off their Survive and Thrive program Thursday 25th August 2011 with the Annual Westpac Business Breakfast at Skilled Stadium.

Managing Director of Economics at the Westpac Bank, Bill Evans, addressed over 200 business leaders, presenting information on the current and future economic environment locally and internationally.
